“Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let the pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness.” ~ Kurt Vonnegut (often attributed to Iain Thomas)
Even This
“Do I know you?” I was asked.
And I smiled, “I hope so.
We must have met before.
I arrive as a gift,
a presence for the here and now,
to remind us that each of us
is worthy of being seen,
worthy of being cherished.
Mistakes happen –
we spill the milk,
we lose our way,
we misunderstand.
If it happens, I forgive myself.
But when being unseen,
dismissed, neglected,
becomes the pattern,
something is rightfully wrong.
We are not made
to disappear.
Still –
even this can be transformed.
Like compost,
what felt wasted
becomes tomorrow’s soil,
where new roots take hold,
where life can begin again.
So I give myself what’s needed:
love, compassion,
patience, and breath.
I try, every day,
because every day is new,
a doorway swinging open.
Yet doors are not always simple.
They can glitch,
they can appear wide and welcoming
but close without warning,
asking for something unnamed
to be brought to the threshold.
And when clarity is missing,
when communication breaks,
we stumble in the half-light,
searching for what might open
the way forward.
Still, even this –
this pause, this puzzle,
this silence—
is not the end.
It too can soften,
it too can teach,
it too can be made new.
Let us give grace,
and be grateful –
for what we have,
for what is,
and for the chance to rise,
again and again.
Even this –
this stumble,
this lesson,
this moment –
can become part of the gift.
And so, part of life.
